Venice on Weekend

Venice on Weekend

Things to remember before starting your day:

  • If you are staying for 2 days then take a Water Taxi pass for 2 days.
  • 20 Euro for 24 hours, 30 Euro for 48 hours, etc.
  • Buy a Venice Museum pass or the Chorus Circuit Pass as per your interest. If you purchase either of these passes, you can waltz into them without standing in queues.

Day 1:

Arrived in Venice

8:30 AM –

Take your healthy and fully packed breakfast in your hostel/ hotel.

9:30 AM –

Start your day 1 in Venice by visiting Basilica di San Marco (Church), also known as St.Mark’s Basilica nice and early in the day to escape the crowd. Situated on Piazza San Marco, this Basilica of Byzantine domes decked in gold ground mosaics and intricate designs is a sight behold.

Basilica is highly recommended to understand the significance of this Basilica in biblical history. If you have time, you should definitely climb up the Campanile di San Marco ( Bell Tower) for a fabulous aerial view of St. Mark’s Square.

Entrance fee St Mark’s Campanile

The trip up and down costs 15-20 Euro approx per person.

11:00 AM –

Move towards Doge’s Palace (Museum), right next door to the Basilica is the Doge’s Palace, the seat of political and administrative power of the Venitian Republic from its birth to its end.

The public entrance to the Doge’s Palace in Venice is through the Porta del Frumento, approached through the colonnade under the 14th-century waterfront façade. Public services and the Museo dell’ Opera are located on the ground floor, what used to be the palace’s kitchens are now partly occupied also by a space for temporary exhibitions. The visit to the upper floors starts in the extraordinary courtyard, from where you pass up to the Loggia on the first floor (where the Doge’s Apartments are located) and then to the Institutional Chambers, throughout the first and second floors. The visit finishes with the Armoury and Prisons.

The trip costs for Doge’s Palace + 3 Museum Pass is 20-25 Euro approx per person.

If you don’t wish to go inside then you don’t opt for the pass but you can explore the place outside.

1:00 PM –

Head towards Dorsoduro (Walking Tour) and grab a Lunch meal while you’re here.

On this 3 to 4 hour* walking tour you will cover:

  • Gallerie dell’Accademia
  • Peggy Guggenheim Collection
  • Cà Rezzonico
  • San Sebastiano
  • Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute
  • Scuola Grande dei Carmini, etc.

Most of these attractions are a part of the Venice Museum pass or the Chorus Circuit Pass, so if you purchase either of these passes, you can waltz into them without standing in queues.

Walkthrough Fondamenta Delle Zattere while you’re here and delight your eyes with a panoramic view of the Giudecca Canal and the line of picturesque buildings on the canal’s periphery. Walk around the Squero di San Trovaso (gondola workshop) near Zattere and take a look at the laborious efforts being made to build gondolas.

5:00 PM –

Make your way to the Grand Canal, board the gondola of your choice and snuggle in for a 30-45 minute romantic gondola ride along the canals of Venice.

Gondolas are one of the most iconic symbols of Venice. The entire world knows the silhouette of these elegant Venetian boats plying on the water of the canals of Venice, rowed by the renown gondoliers.

The best time for a gondola ride would be early evening, around sunset.

Standard gondola rides in Venice have a fixed cost of 80 euros for a private 25-30 minutes tour.

6:00 PM –

Move towards the fabled Rialto Bridge, a Renaissance stone span lined by shops. Pause at the top for the classic Grand Canal shot.

The Rialto Bridge, the most famous and loveliest span across Venice’s Grand Canal, and the market that extends from its foot into San Polo.

Take a few minutes to wander the stalls of the Rialto Market on the far (S. Polo) side, then thread your way south through the S. Polo district to the Scuola Grande di San Rocco.

7:30 PM –

Come again to San Marco (it’s just 10 minutes walking from Rialto Bridge), it is the tourist heart of Venice. The area is often thronged with people, and the restaurants on and around St. Mark’s Square offer multilingual menus for the international crowd. The surrounding streets are filled with casual snack bars, upscale fashion boutiques and shops selling glass art and gift items.

It’s Dinner time. Find your own special place to eat. Every restaurant will be at least half-filled with tourists, but you can still find a good one. Many restaurants shut their kitchens before 9 pm.

8:30 PM –

Come to your Hostel/ Hotel and take some rest.

Day 2:

8:00 AM-

Breakfast

9:00 AM –

Start your day with the wonderful streets of Venice, you will fall in love with the streets. Venice has its fair share of monuments, museums, and decorated churches, but frankly just about the best thing you can do with your second morning is ignored all the sights and just wander the streets aimlessly. Trust me, I do it all the time, and it’s great.

11:00 AM –

Take a water taxi and you could start off with Murano, a fisherman island and the biggest of the 3 islands (Murano, Burano & Torcello Islands), world-famous for its glass factories. Do visit first the Glass factory where they will show how they make the things with the glass (many glass factories will not charge anything if you wish you can give the tip at the end of the show).

Lunch time 🙂

After visiting the Glass Museum and Chiesa di San Pietro Martire jump back on-board your Vaporetto and enjoy a half an hour ride to Burano. The eye-popping coloured houses are sure to steal your heart while you’re here and so will the intricate hand tatted Burano lace.

Now make your way to the Torcello and enjoy the grassy, secluded island decked in Byzantine mosaics and marshy muck lands. Walk around The Devil’s Bridge and Cattedrale di Torcello (Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta).

4:00 PM –

It’s Beach time, take a water taxi and head towards the Lido Island Beach.
It is a popular beach with marvelous views. Walk along the Gran Viale with classy views of plush hotels, boutique shops, and umpteen restaurants lining the stone walkway.

6:00 PM –

Exit the Lido Island beach and head towards St. Marco and enjoy the evening.

7:30 PM –

Dinner

8:30 PM –

Head towards your Hostel/ Hotel.
Collect your bags and get ready for your Bus/ Train.
